San Pedro del Pinatrar

San Pedro del Pinatar is a municipality in the Spanish province of Murcia in the Murcia region with an area of 22 km².
North of the town lie the towns of Elche (67 km) and Alicante (78 kilometers) south of the city of Cartagena (38 kilometers)
and atwest of the city of Murcia (50 km).
San Pedro del Pinatar has 24,285 habitants (1-1-2012).

Chapel of Apostle Peter

The city got its name in the seventeenth century after the construction by the Franciscans of a chapel dedicated to the Apostle Peter.
This was because most of the inhabitants were fishermen. Previously, the town was known as Pinatar.
This name obtained by the existence of vast pine forests.
In the book "Libro de la Montería", which deals with the life of Alfonso XI of Castile, described how hunters in the area during the winter came to hunt wild pigs.

Tourism

The municipality is located on the north side of the Mar Menor and is located on the Mediterranean area called the Costa Calida (Spanish for the warm coast).
